District 9 is a science fiction film directed by Neill Blomkamp. It takes place in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is based on Alive in Joburg, a short film about aliens landing in South Africa.

my best guess is that it is to make things more intriguing...
I remember seeing this on youtube a few years back. Looks promising. Coincidently, in a similar theme, there is a trailer up for the re-imagining of that old 80's series 'V'. It has some familiar faces in the cast including the lovely Morena Baccarin from Firefly/Serenity. Empire magazine thinks they are looking for a Battlestar Galactica type of vibe.
