Toshiba readies 750GB & 1TB 2.5" hard drives
electronista reports: [edited]
The MK7559GSXP is the first 2.5", 9.5mm drive to hold 750GB. As such, it can provide the capacity expected of a desktop hard drive but fit into thin-and-light notebooks like the MacBook Pro as well as all-in-one desktops and digital media hubs.
Despite having about 17 percent more capacity, the new SATA II drive consumes about 14 percent less power than the 640GB drive it's set to replace and could extend the theoretical battery life. It spins at just 5,400RPM, but its very high density, two-platter design may compensate for the perceived drop in access speed.
In tandem with the thin drive, Toshiba is rolling out the MKxx59GSM line, which brings 750GB and 1TB drives but in a taller three-platter, 12.5mm (0.49in) profile more suited to desktop replacement notebooks and other computers where thinness isn't an absolute priority. Both rotate at the same speed but is slightly less energy-efficient.
All three of the disks are due to start sampling for system builders in April and should enter mass production soon afterwards.

CoPilot Live 8 for iPhone
alk.eu.com reports: [edited]
CoPilot Live runs on your iPhone, with complete street maps of UK and Ireland and full 7 digit UK postcodes. It's your personal travelling assistant that's always at your side, ready to guide you with turn-by-turn directions and keep you informed with useful live information about your route.
Street maps are stored on the iPhone, and there's no need for extra hardware or monthly fees.
- - - - -
Brett's 2p'orth: At £26.99 this represents excellent value if you possess a (G or GS) iPhone. I've used it for a few long-ish trips, and it has got me from A-B, patiently re-mapping its route when I decided to follow a different path to the one it has suggested.

Quantum mechanics gets practical
University of California reports: [edited]
Researchers at UC Santa Barbara have provided the first clear demonstration that the theory of quantum mechanics applies to the mechanical motion of an object large enough to be seen by the naked eye. Their work satisfies a longstanding goal among physicists.
In a paper published in the March 17 issue of the advance online journal Nature, Aaron O'Connell, a doctoral student in physics, and John Martinis and Andrew Cleland, professors of physics, describe the first demonstration of a mechanical resonator that has been cooled to the quantum ground state, the lowest level of vibration allowed by quantum mechanics.
With the mechanical resonator as close as possible to being perfectly still, they added a single quantum of energy to the resonator using a quantum bit (qubit) to produce the excitation. The resonator responded precisely as predicted by the theory of quantum mechanics.
"This is an important validation of quantum theory, as well as a significant step forward for nanomechanics research," said Cleland.
The researchers reached the ground state by designing and constructing a microwave-frequency mechanical resonator that operates similarly to - but at a higher frequency than - the mechanical resonators found in many cellular telephones.
They wired the resonator to an electronic device developed for quantum computation, a superconducting qubit, and cooled the integrated device to temperatures near absolute zero. Using the qubit as a quantum thermometer, the researchers demonstrated that the mechanical resonator contained no extra vibrations. In other words, it had been cooled to its quantum ground state.
The researchers demonstrated that, once cooled, the mechanical resonator followed the laws of quantum mechanics. They were able to create a single phonon, the quantum of mechanical vibration, which is the smallest unit of vibrational energy, and watch as this quantum of energy exchanged between the mechanical resonator and the qubit.
While exchanging this energy, the qubit and resonator become 'quantum entangled', such that measuring the qubit forces the mechanical resonator to 'choose' the vibrational state in which it should remain.
In a related experiment, they placed the mechanical resonator in a quantum superposition, a state in which it simultaneously had zero and one quantum of excitation. This is the energetic equivalent of an object being in two places at the same time. The researchers showed that the resonator again behaved as expected by quantum theory.

InVisage promise better cameras for mobile phones
Digital Photography Review reports: [edited]
InVisage Technologies has announced sensors it says can offer four times better performance than conventional CCD and CMOS sensors. The company's 'QuantumFilm' technology uses the unique electronic behavior of quantum dots (precisely-sized nano-scale crystals trapped in a polymer film) to replace conventional silicon photodiodes.
The company says the quantum dots themselves are twice as sensitive to light as conventional photodiodes and that their placement on the sensor surface offers a further doubling of sensitivity over front-illuminated CMOS designs. The film can be positioned on conventional circuitry, allowing the chips to be produced more cheaply than CMOS or CCD designs.
The company says that only prototypes exist at present, with samples chips going into production in Q4 of 2010 and full production starting in 2011.

Flame
Escape Motions reports: [edited]
Flame is a painting program. You can change different brush settings and paint your own flame paintings. When you change background from black to white, palette changes from additive to substactive and the feeling of the painting is very different. It's not easy to explain all brush parameters, so I leave this for your experimentation.

St John's Bible
saintjohnsbible.org reports: [edited]
In 1998, Saint John's Abbey and University commissioned renowned calligrapher Donald Jackson to produce a hand-written, hand-illuminated Bible. We invite you to explore this work of art that unites an ancient Benedictine tradition with the technology and vision of today, illuminating the Word of God for a new millennium.
The Saint John's Bible is a work of art and a work of theology. A team of artists coordinated by Donald Jackson in Wales and a team of scholars in Central Minnesota have brought together the ancient techniques of calligraphy and illumination with an ecumenical Christian approach to the Bible rooted in Benedictine spirituality. The result is a living document and a monumental achievement.

Canon EOS-1D Mark IV
Digital Photography Review have published an in-depth review of Canon's latest wallet-buster ($6199.99 body-only).
Their summary:
"Putting the EOS-1D Mk3's demons behind it Canon has produced an upgrade that's not just better, but delivers an incredibly versatile tool that blurs the 'sports camera/studio camera' line more than ever before. The Nikon D3S might beat it in very low light, but if you want speed and resolution the EOS-1D Mark IV delivers convincingly."

Honda 3R-C
Wired reports: [edited]
The 3R-C, designed at Honda’s R&D center in Milan, is the company’s latest gaze into its crystal ball to see the future of personal mobility. Apparently that future is small, hyperefficient and slightly weird.
The battery and motor — no specs offered on either — are mounted low to keep the center of gravity low and stability high. A clear canopy keeps the car, and anything you might have in it, secure when parked. It retracts to create a windshield.
It has a flexible cover to keep you dry when things get wet, and there’s a small trunk up front for carrying stuff.
